[Line chart showing the effects of storage on seed quality (if you need help accessing this chart contact Julie Robinson at jcrobi@gmail.com)] Over the next six months, seed companies will be monitoring seed in storage more frequently than in the past. Seed labs have noted more mold on seeds because of last year’s wet fall. [Picture showing a flooded soybean field with moldy soybean pods] This year, many seed companies are recommending fungicide treatments as a precaution.
[Picture showing three seed piles] Growers should verify the vigor of their seed prior to planting [Scatter chart showing 2009 Vigor A A%] by completing accelerated aging tests on their own or asking the seed companies for a recent accelerated aging test for the seed lot. [Line chart showing 2008-2009 Soybean Germ and A A% Non-certified samples - Monthly Germ and A A Averages] A recent accelerated aging test is important because seed vigor tends to decline in storage more than germination rates.
